Wetland Treasures

The class has been on a virtual journey from the mouth of the Rangitata up to a rare inland high country ecosystem- O Tu Wharekai, a wetland area that includes 12 lakes that make up the Ashburton Lakes. The wetland is a habitat for native fish, trout, salmon, waterbirds, threatened native plants and aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates.
The students worked in pairs to select one of the 'Wetland Treasures' to study using a range of 'Thinking tools'. They presented their findings to the class in a variety of ways. Your child can login into the LEARNZ website and share with you more of their 'learning' journey. Please find below two examples from Kahn and Larkin/ Lexi and Phoebe.

Wow look at all our movers and groovers at our disco tonight. Don't they all look fantastic?

Te Whare

Today we spent a fun time in Te Whare with Matua Mark. We created our own Mihimihi and displayed them on a spiral which we hung in the classroom.

Please come into our classroom so we can share them with you.

Amazing writing from M9 students

Wow - What amazing writers and 'Thinkers' we have in Room 9.
Read below the description Rose wrote about her Dad and the great Black Hat 'Thinking' that Larkin did about having a school drinking tap that served up fizzy drink instead of water.

Daddy Oh

My Dad is the best in the world and we are all lucky in our family.

Dad has sparkling blue eyes like the sky on a sunny day The sparkle is like a shining star in the sky at night. He has brown silky hair like mud that pigs lie in when they are hot. He has a ginger prickle beard, the ginger looks like my 13 year old brother's hair. Dad has prickles all over his face, the prickles are nearly as sharp as a knife. So when he gives me a kiss and a hug the prickles poke me on the face.

Dad likes eggs , bacon, tomato and sausages for breakfast.

I like my dad because he is nice to me, but not when he is grumpy to me.

Black  Hat Thinking

If our school drinking tap had fizzy drink instead of water it would cause many problems.

  • It gives energy that runs out fast because it has lots of sugar.
  • It gives you a sore tummy because you can't process that much sugar at once.
  • It makes you need a drink again because the sugar goes quickly into your blood stream and your kidneys can't process it that quickly and sends a message to your brain that you need more water to help your kidneys work.
  • it is bad because your brain can't function that well because of the sugar and if the brain can't function the body can't.
